Encon & Nevill Long Delivers on Passive Fire Protection for Broadgate Development

Encon & Nevill Long East London supplied passive fire protection and waterproofing solutions for the development of a huge 14-storey mixed use building at 1 Broadgate. Encompassed in the cutting-edge 32-acre Broadgate campus in Central London, the development is part of a £1.5 billion investment which will continue to put the area at the centre of a diverse community where innovation meets finance, food, retail and culture.

The plot comprises of 500,000 sq ft of office space with 46,000 sq ft of retail beneath, with Sir Robert McAlpine delivering the project on behalf of British Land and GIC. Encon supplied specialist contractor Lesterose with fire stopping and waterproofing systems to ensure the next stage of the project could progress safely and to a high standard.

A PFC Corofil fire stopping system was specified to provide passive fire protection while a GCP waterproofing system was used in the construction of the exterior walls. The colossal scale and tight window to complete work meant that meticulous planning and ingenuity was needed on all sides to keep the project progressing smoothly.

Carl Vulgar, Project Manager at Lesterose, comments: “We had a tight programme on site, particularly in stage one where waterproofing needed to be completed prior to the construction of the eight-metre high exterior walls to get the project off the ground. We laid the perimeter waterproofing in two directions simultaneously to speed up the installation process, working closely with our distributor partners to avoid delays.

“Our outstanding relationship with Encon & Nevill Long East London ensured all deliveries arrived on time and to specification. Lucie and Rob are always very helpful and responsive, and their work was key in achieving a positive outcome.”

Lucie Wallace, Encon Area Sales Executive – Structural, East London, adds: “I have an excellent working relationship with Carl and we spoke regularly throughout this project to deliver the service needed. This included collaborating with our manufacturer partners, PFC Corofil and GCP, to ensure the necessary products were available when they were needed.

“Crucially, we booked all our deliveries for specific times and each arrived to site as specified, which was vital when delivering to Central London. I also visited the site with my colleague Chelsea Campbell, Regional Fire Protection Manager, to see the products being installed. This was very helpful to capitalise on her fire protection expertise and help bring the project to a successful conclusion.”
