In a previous blog, we highlighted the numerous benefits of using dry screed flooring systems v wet screed. In this next blog, we focus on the Knauf Brio system, which utilises a range of low-density floor panels for use on solid substrates.
Low density flooring panels, also called boards, provide an economical solution that is quick and easy to install in areas where heavy loading or brittle flooring finishes do not apply.
Available in 600x1200mm panels and two thicknesses, 18mm or 23mm, the panels have a density of 1100-1200kg/m3 and are designed for applications where they are fully supported.
Key benefits include:
Knauf Brio Floor panels have low thermal resistance, and the high thermal conductivity of the panels improve response times whether heating or cooling the floor. According to the BSRAI test, these boards are 43% more thermally efficient than chipboard meaning the heating systems can improve response times for heating or cooling the floor, leading to reduced CO2 emissions when compared with chipboard and screed systems. Furthermore, Brio will optimise the benefits of air and ground source heat pumps.
The high mass of Knauf Brio panels create high acoustic performances with the feel of a solid floor underfoot. These panels have a 10mm wood fibre panel bonded to them which reduces impact noise as well as limiting airborne noise.
These panels are for fully supported surfaces such as concrete or existing flooring, as part of a floating floor construction over thermal insulation or underfloor heating. They are particularly suited to retrofits, refurbishments and new builds.
Brio has a lapped edge so it requires Knauf GIFABond Blue and nine Knauf Brio screws per board. This adhesive is blue which makes it easy to identify that the correct adhesive has been used and the installed system is compliant with the specification.
You’ll also need to install the Knauf Flooring edge strips around the edge for expansion and to combat flanking sound transmission.
To cut the boards we recommend the use of polycrystalline diamond blades (PCD) along with class M extraction unit and appropriate PPE.
With Knauf Brio, you can walk on the floor after only 24 hours, which means follow on trades can access rooms within shorter periods. Whether that’s installing floor finishes or commissioning under floor heating systems, Brio helps you get the job done more quickly.
No water is needed for installation, we know how difficult that can be to get, particularly in high rise buildings. The other benefit is that no additional moisture is added to the build.
Easy installation that allows for planned end points each day. This maximises the efficiency of the project avoiding interface issues with other trades and helping to prevent project delays.
The boards are either 18mm or 23mm thick, and significantly thinner than the 40-75mm needed with the traditional method. This can give 57mm extra floor to ceiling height in each room – an essential aspect where space is a premium.
