Encon & Nevill Long Supports ‘The Living Room’: A Safe Space for Health and Wellbeing

Encon & Nevill Long recently assisted SPUD, the arts and education charity, with their progressive new project, The Living Room – a grassroots-funded structure designed to provide a safe space to help vulnerable people improve their mental health.

The building has been specifically shaped by the charity’s experiences of working with vulnerable people and their carers. Converted from a disused water tower, tactile materials and a minimalist design were chosen to provide a serene and unobtrusive atmosphere for people to relax in nature.

The site includes a sensory garden and a 180-degree wraparound projection wall, allowing people to immerse themselves in the experience free from invasive surroundings. Encon & Nevill Long Fareham branch was proud to support the initiative with the donation of insulation materials and passive fire protection products.

SPUD helps individuals such as those with dementia, additional learning needs and young LGBTQ+ people, providing them the opportunity to experience serene moments doing very simple activities. At The Living Room, facilities include art workshops, an LGBTQ+ hub and light refreshments.

Mark Drury, SPUD Director, comments: “Many people have been affected by mental health, my own family included. We want to help improve people’s health and wellbeing through creative, artist-led activities. If The Living Room project helps to create a moment of happiness and memories, it will have achieved its goals.

“The project would not have been possible without support from companies like Encon & Nevill Long. We are lucky to have a great champion in Paul Latham, Nevill Long Strategy Director, who we have worked with for years and is always keen to help us. The whole process ran extremely smoothly, and we received everything we needed on time.”
