With a rapidly growing skills gap across construction and building materials supply, the BMF identifies apprentices as pivotal to attracting and retaining talent and building excellence in our sector.
Through this Pledge, Encon commits to employing 30 apprentices across our 23 sites by 2030, representing 5% of our workforce. This latest development follows our recent Bronze accreditation by the 5% Club, awarded in December 2023 and reinforces our dedication to developing our employees through ‘earn and learn’ schemes.
Deborah Gore, HSEQ & HR Director, comments: “Our commitment to the BMF Apprenticeship Pledge and the 5% Club represents a key tenet of our ‘Employer of Choice’ ethos. We value employee learning and development and recognise how apprenticeship opportunities for new and existing employees are instrumental in helping individuals fulfil their roles and ambitions, developing our workforce and strengthening our specialist knowledge and expertise.”
John Newcomb, BMF CEO adds: “Many people still think of apprentices as young people entering the job market – but that is far from the case. The versatility of apprenticeships means they are ideal for developing new recruits and an excellent way to motivate, upskill and retain existing staff as they move through different stages of their careers.
“By taking this Pledge with our members, we are encouraging an industry-wide focus on apprentices and recognising the value of alternative pathways to qualifications equivalent to traditional training routes.”
